Forbes Burnham

Burnham was the Prime Minister of Guyana from 1964-1980, and the President from 1980 until his death in 1985. He instigated the “clean up” campaign of Guyanese government (specifically his cabinet), though he also is rumored to have perpetrated government corruption, including the rigging of elections and knowing that his ministers were corrupt. He pushed for nationalism and the manufacturing and export of local goods, indicating a reluctance to be dependent on other nations which Peoples Temple would have appreciated.┬áHe had ties to other fringe groups, besides Jonestown, including the House of Israel.
